Many might wonder about the title of this blog: Stone Angels & Iron Gates: accoutrement in waiting for His Return. So I thought I'd share a bit as to how I came to rely on the notion of "accoutrement" in waiting for His Return.

This is a recent photo of my sweetie Anne's grave. Anne is my second baby to be buried in this small children's cememtery near our home. I always love it when my camera catches the wind in her spinners cuz it so reminds me of of a sermon I heard once by Billy Graham. He was speaking on John chapter 3 and how we can't see the wind, & yet we know it's there. He spoke about how that's also true with the Holy Spirit, who Jesus says is like the wind going where ever He wants, and how it's the forceful yet invisible power of the Holy Spirit that rebirths our hearts so that we're able to know the True & Living God.

When I think of the word accoutrement I think of accessorizing. You know: fashion extras, trimmings. and decorations that make things look nice. One might also think of tools, gear or equipment that can make things endure or last better.

Well as we wait for His Return, many (if not most) of us will spend much of that time laying in wait under the sod. And thus, it is often customary to use various accessories (accoutrement) to make the graveside look better and last longer while we wait. Even the women, the morning after Jesus had been crucified & entombed, went with flowers & such to embellish his grave. We're even told that Jesus' friend Mary bumped into a guy at Jesus' tomb whom she thought was the gardener, and cemeteries to this day hire grounds keepers to maintain the flowers, trees & shrubs that are often planted as memorial endearments.

The Scriptures tell us that the "dead in Christ will raise first" so it would seem to me that the cemeteries need to be a place where we stay alert & watchful. In fact, it behooves us as Believers to make better investments in burial grounds that have all but been forgotten as the pagan practice of cremation take hold in our culture.

I personally believe that it's critically important that we plan & prepare, not just for they who may still be alive so as to be "caught up in the air", but especially for they who are already asleep in Christ, for it is THEY who are asleep in Christ who will respond first to the Archangel's Trumpet Call.

I know many who don't think any of the post mortem stuff matters. I've been given several lectures as to why I would bother wasting my time tending to the cemetery when my girls are in heaven. And it is true that their spirits are at rest in the arms of Jesus. But what many well-intended Believers forget is that their DNA is here, under the sod, waiting for His Return just like the rest of us wait.

We're told in Scripture that when The Trumpet Call of His Return sounds the graves will give forth their dead, and they who were asleep in Christ will be given their Resurrected bodies & be reunited with their spirits. Those "new" bodies are Resurrected & transformed from the DNA that rests beneath the sod. So yes, for Believers especially, it is important to tend the cemetery and they who lay in wait there.

And thus you see that stone angels and iron gates are merely a few of the more common accoutrement that humanity uses to make the graveyard prettier & better able to withstand the weather of time--

while we wait for His Return...

Now Martha said to Jesus,

Jesus wept. Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death.

Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:

"Hosanna! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!"

Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it--as it is written:

"Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey's colt."

But Jesus answered them, saying,

"The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor."

Then Jesus said to them,

"A little while longer the Light is with you. Walk while you have the Light, lest darkness overtake you. He who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the Light, believe in the Light, that you may become Sons of Light."

These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.

"I have come as a Light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness."

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Jesus said,

"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know."

And Jesus said to him,

"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

I came across these interesting pages from www.texasescapes.com I was taken there by a tweet I got today in reference to Baby Head cemetery. Naturally, that piqued my interest, so off on a million link tangent I went... It's sort of a sad reminder of the hatred that's been part of our nation's history. With the sadness of Nine Eleven so fresh in our hearts, it behooves us to remember all those who have died and fought for America. I realize that Native Americans have suffered much by the westward expansion of Greco-Roman Civilization, but there have been many innocent caucasions who have suffered as well. Adam's Curse is most excruciatingly poignant when children are caught in it's execution.

It's places like these that I love the most; so serene & majestic. I've said before & I'll say it again, anyone who claims to believe in the Resurrection needs to be paying better attention to the cemeteries. For it is there that the "dead in Christ" shall rise first. It's there that we should be keeping a watchful eye and investing more of our time, efforts & resources to proper cemetery upkeep! Believers who walk away from the cemetery without a second care clearly indicate to the World that they don't understand the slightest bit of the Resurrection we hold so dear. It's truly the most tragic example of the unbelieving Church.

My baby girl has her very own graveyard rabbit. He's a cute little guy that we catch sitting on her headstone quite frequently. Sadly, they made us remove the gorgeous guara butterfly plant. I hate having my children in the cemetery. I've grown weary of groundskeepers who don't care and cemetery owners that are merely out to make money. The cemetery where our girls are buried boasts about how they give burial plots for children under two for free. What they don't tell you is that the baby plots are in an area that's rather like the welfare section--no proper weeding; no proper tree maintence. One family put in three lovely willows and the groundskeepers killed all but one. Then in an effort to save the remaining tree, the family installed a memorial stone around it to keep the groundskeepers from chopping the crap out of the tree base. There were some lovely bushes along the wall that near the street, but they chopped all those down leaving the unsightly stumps. Weeds grow there and they never take any of them out like they do in the paid areas. It's sad that we parents come along and try to tidy the place up and make it nice, only to be told not to. Yes, their plots may be free for the babies, but we pay in so many other ways.

The Flickr member who posted this foto writes, "We ALL waited out a grieving mourner to get close to this monument too, apparently, a little girl. This isn't a good shot by any means, but I just wanted to show the marker. It had a bit of a creepiness to it, but hopefully, it offers some comfort to those she left behind."

I'm utterly offended. Not by the monument, since it's an absolutely beautiful tribute to a little girl who is obviously loved & missed. If I could erect such a sculpture for my own girls there would be fifty more like it in the world! Its just lovely how the parents have made her little resting place such a grand place to sit with her. Like them, we put in our own graveside bench so we could sit with our special daughters who sleep beneath the sod. And like them we're presently working on a fund raiser to erect an angel monument in the baby garden where our girls rest.

No, what offends me is that the poster actually admits to having to wait for the mourners to leave in order to get the foto--as if they inconvenienced his time or got in his way. And then he had the nerve to say there's something "creepy" about the graveside monument.

Excuse me, but the only thing creepy about any of it is the photographer impatiently hovering in the wings, waiting for the bereaved to leave so he could get a photo of some poor child's gravesite. It's like the paparazzi snapping shots through the car windows as Princess Diana bled to death.

I kid you not, if I had been the mourning mother that his hovering presence waited on to leave, I would have absolutely & unabashedly come unglued, and the cops would have had to have taken me away!

The nerve of some people! And to think how they openly spew forth their own tactless ignorance is just utterly astounding! I guess in this grievous journey of burying two children of my own, I'll never ever cease to be amazed at the flamboyantly callous nature of humanity.

To be a cemetery hobbiests, enthusiast, or geneologist is all well & good--it's a noble hobby that I enjoy for myself. But NO cemetery enthusiasts should ever ever ever forget the very real & anguished mourners who don't frequent the cemetery to capture a photograph or enjoy a peaceful walk.

No, some of us frequent the cemetery because we've got children or parents or siblings interred there. Some of us have no choices in our hobbies-- they were thrust upon us like Diana's horrid car crash in the Paris tunnel. How some fotogs live with themselves is a real mystery...

It's a lovely piece. I hate that I'm forced to see beyond the stone and serenity of landscape. I can't help but envision the parents who had such a special piece placed there-- for their baby son. I wish there was someway I could express the anguish by which they invested in the sculpture. I guess you'll have to trust me when I say that having to invest in such a stone is surreal and hurts the soul in ways beyond comprehension.

I just thought this photo was so sweet. I wish I knew Enzo's birthday, but it's edited from the foto. It's uploaded on April 18, 2008, but the headstone date looks like a 7--could have been April, but don't know. I know that my own little April Angel is soon to have a birthday too. Perhaps our little angels play together in the butterfly meadows of heaven and keep their mamas & daddies in their prayers. Perhaps they wait for us to join them even more eagerly than we realize.

Have a gentle Enzo seaon friends. Those weeks leading up to are often a whirlwind of emotion and such...I too am caught up in the April tornado of Dorothy.

"A gravestone that I came across while walking through the cemetery. All it says is "baby" across the top and "1918" on the side. No name or anything. Breaks the heart to think of the poor little nameless baby. "

yes, it is sad. But it would appear that the parents grieved him or her aptly, noted by the aged angel that still sits watch all these years later. Back then, it wasn't the tradition to name a stillbirth or early infant death. Plus, this stone appears to be of standard stock which parents would have had to pay extra for additional engraving. Our cemetery's full of temporary markers that never get replaced with permanent headstones. At least back then a temporary marker was made to last a a century--nothing like today's laminated paper in a bent frame that doesn't last the summer.

this is such a sweet shot. As a grieving mom who's taken lots of such shots of her baby girls' graves, I just thought it was the sweetest capture of this darling boy. I don't know if the Flickr member who posted the picture is related to the sweet boy or not. Hopefully whomever took the shot did so with the respect of heart for the child they capture and the parents who grieve his absence.

The Flickr member who shared this photo notes the above information. She doesn't indicate whether the information is engraved elsewhere or how she comes to know the precise ages that she quotes. Nevertheless, I had to ponder on the information for quite a while. It would seem that something like an accident or illness must have happened to both Willie and Mary together since they died within four days of each other. But then several years later, if that weren't enough for their parents to cope with, they also had to add Charlie to the tomb when he too was a mere toddler. illness? accident? Whatever the case, I can't help but be severely stricken over the losses that some people have been called to endure in this life. Such a grand monument, and yet what even grander sorrows for the hearts of Willie, Mary and Charlies' parents.
